KCB interim head coach Andrew Amonde
believes it was experience and composure that propelled his side to the
Kabeberi 7s crown, while Daystar Falcons coach Collins Bosire has hailed his
team’s historic run to a maiden Cup final as proof they belong among the
country’s elite.
KCB overpowered the youthful inspired
Falcons 20–10 in Sunday’s final at the RFUEA Grounds, extending their lead at
the summit of the National Sevens Circuit.
The bankers produced a ruthless first-half
blitz, scoring three unanswered tries through Asati, Elvis Olukusi, and Vincent
Onyala to go 20–0 up, before weathering a spirited comeback from Daystar after
the break.
Reflecting on the victory, Amonde
emphasized his team’s maturity in big moments.
“We’re excited, it’s been coming, we’ve
worked really hard for it. The experience that we had has just shown it. We
still have one more tournament to go, so we are really focusing on finishing
high. We’ll go back to the drawing board, correct whatever didn’t work here
today, and even get better,” he said.
He also credited Daystar for pushing them
in the decider saying they had prepared to face Daystar as worthy opponents.
“We took them as a worthy opponent because
they were able to play worthy opponents for them to get to that final. We just
took our chances when we had them and focused on winning,” Amonde added.
For Daystar, the weekend was nothing short
of historic. They swept through the pool stages unbeaten — defeating Homeboyz
15–7, Catholic Monks 24–12, and MMUST 25–12 — before knocking out Menengai
Oilers 24–19 in the quarterfinals and stunning Strathmore Leos 12–10 in the
semis.
Bosire said his team had set modest targets
but rose to the occasion with fearless rugby.
“The final didn’t go our way, but I’m
really proud of what we’ve done. What affected us was not controlling the
kick-offs. They got 20 points in the first half, but in the second half, they
didn’t score and we got two tries. If we had possession earlier, it could have
been different,” he noted.
Looking ahead, Bosire said the Falcons have
raised their own bar.
“At the start of the season, our target was
a top-six finish. By reaching this final, we are closer to that. Going into
Dala, we’ll take it one game at a time, try to win all our games on day one,
and push for the quarters,” he said.
The triumph lifts KCB to 104 points, nine clear of Strathmore Leos. With just the Dala 7s in Kisumu remaining, the bankers need only a semifinal finish to seal the overall crown. Yet Daystar’s meteoric rise means the final leg promises as much inspiration as it does competition.
