Kabras Sugar RFC 7s head coach Marlin Mukolwe has rubbished claims that the team is underperforming in the shorter version of the game saying they are assembling a team that will challenge for the title next season.

Mukolwe says high-flying Strathmore Leos and KCB boast of top 7s talents unlike Kabras who majorly field young prospects.

"I don't think that things aren't really working for us but we are trying to make a more dominant side in the 7s and we know what it will take is exposing more players in the same set up.

"When you look at teams that are dominant currently like KCB, the players have been around for quite some time but for us we have that inconsistency of having the same players time and again," said Mukolwe.

"So that's why we are trying to introduce more young players to the set so that even if the senior guys are taken off to the national team we will still have quality players to continue with the program," added the coach.

Kabras have been without the services of their talisman Kevin Wekesa who is out of the country playing for Monaco RFC in France.

"There is some element of experience and mentorship for the younger boys so when he's not around that's what we miss. You see clubs like KCB have their experienced players around most of the time so lacking services from Wekesa is kind of a setback but we have to cope with it because whatever he is doing is good for his career and growth and the experience he gains from there he brings back to the club."

The Millers will be hoping to bounce back during the Kabeberi 7s, the penultimate leg of the National Sevens Circuit.

"We stand a very good chance this time. Going to Embu 7s we had a setback and we had to regroup and find our confidence back. You know being relegated to the bowl competition is such a confidence shaker but in Embu we got our confidence back.

"We only a few things that we couldn't control like the distance we travelled, the aspect of recovery; we travelled from Nairobi and we had only two days to train and then we were back on the road to Embu.

"Those factors played a big part to our performance but going to Kabeberi we will have rested enough and the new players we've brought in, their performance levels are starting to improve, so we stand a big chance."
