Job Ochieng sets sights on cementing Harambee Stars spot

The 22-year-old, who plies his trade with Real Sociedad B of Spain, made his Harambee Stars debut in the 3-1 defeat to The Gambia, coming on as a late substitute, before earning his first start during the 5-0 rout over Seychelles at Kasarani Stadium.

Reflecting on his journey, Ochieng said he remains grateful for the trust shown in him by head coach Benni McCarthy.

“It hasn't been easy and I really want to thank the coach for trusting in me and giving me the opportunity to play here,” said Ochieng.

“The first game we had a loss at home but the second game we were able to bounce back and win. I’m very grateful for that.”

Ochieng acknowledged the intensity of international football, noting the high standards on display in the clash against Gambia.

“You could tell that the level was high, which could match the European type of level,” he added.

His journey began at Ligi Ndogo before earning a move to Spain, where he now plays for Real Sociedad B. The midfielder admits the path has not been easy, but he is determined to keep growing.

“It wasn’t easy. I had to fight my way through, but by the grace of God I got the opportunity to join Real Sociedad. It’s been quite a journey, and I’m taking it step by step, trying to get to the first team.”

Ochieng’s call-up comes at a time when Harambee Stars are blending local and international talent in pursuit of building a strong team toward Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2027 and World Cup 2030 qualification.

McCarthy in a past interview praised the youngster’s agility, quick learning, and attacking instinct as key reasons for his inclusion.

Back in Spain, Ochieng has already shown glimpses of his quality, most recently scoring a stunning winner for Real Sociedad B against Real Zaragoza.

With such performances, both for club and country, the midfielder is quickly cementing his place among Kenya’s most promising football exports.
