Kakamega Homeboyz assistant coach Paul Okatwa says they will be going for maximum points against Mara Sugar on Saturday, in what will be their Kenya Premier League (KPL) season opener a week later after match day one.

Speaking after their last training session on Friday ahead of the game, Okatwa said there are no excuses after a thorough preseason.

“Last season we finished third. This time, our goal is the title. We’ve got talented young players coming in also senior players and even though we’ll miss key names like Kevin Amwayi and Gospel Otieno Okoth due to injury, the squad is solid. We’re alert and ready,” said Okatwa.

The coach was also clear about their season’s objective, and his captain Moses Mudavadi believes they have to start strongly if they are to hit the target.

“We are ready. We have our own targets this season, no more settling for third place. Football was made in Western Kenya, and this time we’re going for the championship,” said Mudavadi.

Having once lifted the FKF Cup in 2023, Mudavadi now says that chapter is closed and his focus is on helping Homeboyz win the league in what could be his final season.

“I’m happy here. I want to retire at Homeboyz at the end of the season but not before helping the team lift the league trophy.”

Mudavadi also acknowledged that Mara Sugar will be a tough opponent, especially after last season’s 3-0 defeat.

“We remember what happened. It won’t be easy, but we’re aiming for all three points. Our preseason was great, new players have adapted well,” the captain said.

Kakamega Homeboyz’s new signings this season are; Josphat Lopaga - FC Dynamo Brest – Belarus, Joshua Nyatini - KCB FC, Samwel Otieno - Mara Sugar FC, Derrick Otanga - KCB FC, Rodgers Ouma - Gor Mahia FC, Brian Odhiambo - Kariobangi Sharks FC, Gedeon Bendeka - Gor Mahia FC.

Others are Eugine Okoth - Kibera Black Stars FC, Edwin Mukolwe (GK) - Nairobi City Stars FC, Denis Buketi - Vihiga United FC, Silas Shihemi - Gucha Stars FC, Rodgers Musonye - Green Commandos SC and Abubakar Shing’ona - Mchanga FC.
