Following the draw conducted during the Prinsloo 7s, the hosts have been drawn in Pool A alongside back-to-back Prinsloo 7s champions Strathmore Leos, Zetech Oaks, and MSC Rugby.
Harlequins, currently seventh in the National Sevens Circuit standings with 24 points, have managed sixth-place finishes in both the Driftwood and Prinsloo 7s.
Odongo, who is aiming to defend Quins’ overall circuit title, noted that the competition will be intense, especially with the series already producing two different winners and the inclusion of Uganda’s select side, Ruga Ruga.
“This tournament will be tough. The last two legs have had two different winners, and having Ruga Ruga as well brings a different aspect. Its going to be an exciting weekend of ups and downs, especially big shocks on some teams, and we hope we won’t find ourselves in that basket.”
“The squad is very resilient and knows how to handle pressure, already won last year, so its nothing new to them as they have what it takes to retain the title,” Odongo added.
His sentiments were echoed by former U-20 star and Quins captain Richel Wangila, who expressed confidence despite the team’s slow start to the season.
“We have been building and staying patient. Even after not-so-good runs in the first two legs, we are ready to give fans an exciting show. Our focus is on winning the first game and then taking each match as it comes, with the ultimate aim of making the finals and lifting the trophy,” Wangila stated.
The three-day event kicks off today with the Age Grade tournament in the morning, followed by the Veterans competition in the evening. The main Christie 7s action begins tomorrow, promising high-octane rugby as teams battle for crucial circuit points.
With home support, experienced players, and the determination to reclaim their dominance, Kenya Harlequins will be looking to make a strong statement as they face stiff competition in Pool A and beyond.
