Sports Cabinet Secretary Salim Mvurya, Wednesday held
consultative deliberations with his National Treasury and Economic Planning
counterpart, John Mbadi, to unlock the funding stalemate towards the
actualization of the AGORA–Win Win Afrique Project.
The AGORA initiative, pioneered in Africa through a
France–Africa partnership, brings inclusive sports, cultural, and commercial
spaces into underserved communities to promote talent development and social
cohesion.
The two Cabinet Secretaries agreed to fast-track the
financing framework that will pave the way for the construction of eight
socio-sports and cultural complexes across seven counties.
“Unlocking this project is a major step forward in
expanding access to quality sports and cultural facilities at the community
level. These complexes, complementing the ongoing vision of the Kenya Academy’s
sports and talent academies, will be safe spaces where our youth can nurture
their talents, women can engage in creative and social enterprise, and
vulnerable groups can find inclusion and opportunity.”
The Government of Kenya and the Government of France
had committed to the investment program under the AGORA initiative.
Once completed, the complexes will feature
world-class sports and social infrastructure including football pitches,
athletics tracks, basketball and volleyball courts, social halls, commercial
spaces, and inclusive recreational facilities.
These projects are designed not only to enhance
sports infrastructure but also to nurture talent pathways, create safe
youth-friendly spaces, and foster social cohesion among women, young people,
and vulnerable groups in underserved areas.
This initiative comes at a time when Kenya is
preparing to host major continental tournaments, including AFCON 2027, and is
strengthening community-based sports infrastructure in line with the Bottom-Up
Economic Transformation Agenda (BETA) as envisioned by President William
Ruto.
Earlier this year, CS Mvurya held extensive
deliberations with the French Ambassador to Kenya, H.E. Arnaud Suquet, to accelerate
the partnership.
The collaboration extends beyond infrastructure,
incorporating talent exchange programs, technical cooperation, and cultural
initiatives that will connect Kenyan athletes and creatives with their counterparts
in France and across Africa.
Speaking after the meeting, CS Mvurya reaffirmed the
Government’s commitment: “The Ministry is committed to ensuring Kenya maximizes
the potential benefits from this collaboration.
These complexes represent a powerful symbol of Kenya–France friendship and shared investment in the future of our young people,” CS Mvurya affirmed.
