Gor Mahia head coach Charles Akonnor has underlined his ambition to restore the club’s dominance as the new FKF Premier League season kicks off on September 20.
Speaking on Wednesday during a training session, the Ghanaian tactician, who was appointed earlier this month, said he understands the weight of expectations at K’Ogalo and was ready to align with the club’s winning culture.
“I understand that they want to win. Gor Mahia want to win and we do understand that. We also want to win, don’t get it wrong,” said Akonnor, stressing the need to balance winning results with quality performances.
Akonnor, who captained Bundesliga side VfL Wolfsburg during his playing days and later coached Ghana’s Black Stars, noted that victories sometimes come “ugly” due to the opponent’s style.
However, he emphasized his goal is to guide Gor Mahia toward convincing wins built on strong team play.
“What is important is to get the necessary win. But we want to win in a convincing way where we played well and did all the things that are necessary in the game to win,” he added.
The coach also reflected on cultural similarities between Kenya and Ghana, saying they help him quickly settle into his new role.
“We are similar, Africans are similar. You go to Ghana, there are things you see in Kenya, you see them in Ghana. So we are one people, we do understand certain things,” he observed.
Akonnor’s appointment came after the record league champions Gor Mahia endured a trophy less 2024/25 season, finishing second in the league behind Police FC.
Club chairman Ambrose Rachier described his arrival as “a step toward taking Gor Mahia to the next level,” with the coach handed a two-year deal and the backing of his technical team.
As preparations intensify, fans will be eager to see if Akonnor can blend his vast continental experience with Gor Mahia’s rich tradition to deliver silverware.
His early message is clear: results matter, but style and process will define K’Ogalo’s journey in the new campaign.
Gor Mahia will open their campaign against Bidco United on September 21 at the Moi International Sports Centre Kasarani.
