Kenyan international
defender Michael Kibwage has spoken for the first time since sealing a move to
FKF Premier League champions Gor Mahia, describing the switch as a bold step in
pursuit of growth and more formidable challenges.
His remarks come just
weeks after featuring for Harambee Stars at the CHAN tournament, where his
performances earned praise.
The centre-back says
he opted for K’Ogalo to seek a fresh challenge in a more demanding environment
after previously featuring for AFC Leopards, KCB, Sofapaka, and Tusker.
“I felt I needed a new
environment with players of the same or even higher calibre, and in Gor I
believe I can achieve my dreams,” Kibwage said.
The defender believes
Gor Mahia’s passionate fan base and the high-pressure atmosphere around the
club will sharpen his game.
“Every time you
play and the stands are full, that itself is a positive pressure. I think I was
too comfortable at Tusker, but here the expectations will keep me on my toes,”
he added.
Kibwage also linked
the move to his ambitions with the national team, saying that playing in
pressure-filled matches will prepare him for international duty.
“At the national
team, the fan base is huge, so if I get used to such pressure at club level, it
will be easier to blend on the international stage,” he noted.
His arrival comes at a
time when Gor Mahia are rebuilding after a trophyless campaign last season.
The record league
champions fell short in the FKF Premier League title race, which Kenya Police
FC eventually won, and also suffered a shock FKF Cup exit to NSL side Nairobi
United.
In response, the club
has been active in the transfer market, bringing in seven new signings so far.
Alongside Kibwage, Gor Mahia have added right-back Lewis Esambe Bandi from AFC
Leopards, goalkeeper Byrne Omondi, defensive midfielder Fidel Origa, and
left-back Siraj Mohammed (all from Bandari FC).
To boost their attack,
they have secured striker Veron Ombima from Darajani Gogo and striker Felix
Oluoch from Posta Rangers.
At just 26, Kibwage believes this new chapter with a reinforced Gor Mahia squad will give him the extra push he needs to remain a key figure for both club and country.
