Kenya Federation (FKF) President Hussein Mohamed has called on Kenyans to shift
focus from foreign football leagues and begin actively supporting the country’s
local competitions.
Hussein
expressed concern over the overwhelming obsession many Kenyans have with
European football, urging fans to give equal or more attention to the Kenyan
Premier League (KPL), National Super League (NSL), Women’s Premier League, and
upcoming youth leagues.
“We
must build our own league. The same passion we have for foreign football should
be redirected to our clubs and players. That’s the only way to grow the game
locally,” Hussein emphasized.
The
FKF boss praised the government’s ongoing efforts to boost sports
infrastructure, noting that over 30 stadiums are currently under construction
across different parts of the country — a move he says will provide a solid
foundation for the development of local football.
He
also highlighted the federation’s strong partnerships, saying members of the
private sector have come on board, Azam TV continues to support league
coverage, and the Ministry of Sports is working with over 50 private sector
partners to push the local game forward.
“This
is a turning point for Kenyan football. With the right support, our players
from grassroots to national levels will be discovered, nurtured, and exposed to
greater opportunities,” said Hussein.
He
called on fans, corporate bodies, and the media to rally behind the league,
support upcoming talents, and help elevate the sport to international
standards.
As
the new season kicks off, all eyes are now on how these investments and calls
for support will translate into stronger league performances and greater
national pride.
