The 21-year-old stunned a strong field last year in Brussels, clocking 9:02.36 to claim her maiden Diamond League title ahead of Olympic champion Winfred Yavi of Bahrain (9:02.87) and Uganda’s Peruth Chemutai (9:07.60). Both Yavi and Chemutai will be absent in Zurich, a factor Cherotich’s coach Bernard Rono believes tilts momentum in her favor.
“We’ve been in training with full focus on the World Championships in Tokyo. All eyes are now on Faith, especially with Yavi and Chemutai missing here,” said Coach Rono.
“She is disciplined and mentally tough, and we respect every competitor. Zurich is part of the bigger plan, and we are hopeful for the best.” Rono added
Rono, who oversees a growing group of young athletes at Kalyet Training Camp and the Kalyet Global Sports Communication Camp in Kipkelion, Kericho County, says Zurich is an essential test before Tokyo.
“I want to thank Athletics Kenya, and I also appreciate the efforts of all Team Kenya coaches in keeping our athletes sharp. We are looking forward to a strong outing in Tokyo, and I wish all our athletes the best.” Rono veered
In Zurich, Cherotich will face 2022 world champion Norah Jeruto of Kazakhstan, Marwa Bouzayani of Tunisia, and Gabrielle Jennings of America, among other stars.
Cherotich has already had an impressive Diamond League season, securing wins in Doha, Oslo, and Paris. Yavi managed to beat her once this season at the Prefontaine Classic, clocking 8:45.25 to Cherotich’s 8:48.71, with Chemutai third in 8:51.77.
That clash in Oregon offered a glimpse of what promises to be a fiery showdown at the Worlds.
