Zetech Sparks have climbed to the summit
of the Kenya Women’s Basketball Premier League (KWBL), finishing the regular season in
style with a commanding 68-48 victory over perennial champions Kenya Ports Authority (KPA).
The Sparks wrapped up the season with an
impressive 42 points from 22 games, boasting 20 wins and just two losses.
Head Coach Maurice Obilo says the record is
a testament to the team’s discipline, resilience, and hunger for glory.
“It was a great and tough match, to be honest. It was not an easy
game. We started very low, but later on in the game, we adjusted and began
playing the way we wanted, especially in that second half, and that is what
brought the results,”
noted Obilo.
As the girls wrapped up the regular season
in emphatic style by outlasting the Dockers to claim the top spot in the league,
Coach Obilo praised their resilience and mental toughness, admitting the team
was playing with extra motivation.
Obilo, a former player himself, revealed
that the squad came into the match highly motivated, seeking revenge after a first-leg
loss in Mombasa to KPA earlier in the season.
“It was a little bit personal. We believed that we could have won in
Mombasa. We just made a mistake. We were not really playing against KPA per se;
we were playing against our mistakes,” said the tactician.
“The mistakes we made in Mombasa in the last one or two minutes, those are the things we really worked on. And also, just thinking within the system to make sure that we have great morale and confidence heading into the playoffs,” he added.
