Monica Githinji, World Aquatics certified official and head coach of Team Kenya B for the upcoming tenth Africa Aquatics Zone 3 Swimming Championships on October 16-19 has promised a spirited performance from her squad as they prepare to dive into action at the Kasarani Aquatic Stadium.

The championship has been marked as a qualifier for the World Aquatics Swimming Championship in Beijing in 2026, Youth Games, Commonwealth Games among other international meets.

Monica who rose to prominence during the recent World Aquatics Open Water Swimming Championships in Singapore where she served as Kenya’s assistant coach, sharpened her craft alongside the legendary Fakhry Mansoor of Bandari Swimming Club.

That experience, she says, prepared her for the task of steering Kenya’s B team in one of the region’s most competitive aquatics showdowns.

Speaking to the press, Monica expressed both gratitude and determination: “I am grateful to Kenya Aquatics for the appointment. I promise to give my best and ensure our athletes perform at their highest level. I call on all swimming fans and stakeholders to fill the stands at Kasarani, give our swimmers the support they need, and create that crucial home advantage.

"We are also waiting for government funding to help us stage a proper training camp before the championship. That camp will be vital—not just for testing the athletes’ mental and physical readiness, but also for building team chemistry and unity.”

Beyond her new role, Monica is already making waves at Juja Preparatory and Senior School, where she coaches swimmers who have earned national recognition, including Leon Mwiti.

Her coaching journey began nearly two decades ago at the swimming nursery powerhouse program, Swim Africa, and today she continues to nurture talent while identifying promising open-water marathon swimmers in collaboration with the Kenya Defence Force (KDF), National Police Service, and National Youth Service.

Backing Monica is Team Kenya B Manager Hillary Leboy, another influential figure in Kenyan aquatics. Hillary, who also serves as Head Coach of Torpedo Swim Club, has seen six of his swimmers make the national team.

Known as one of the country’s sharpest swim tacticians, Hillary is currently under a mentorship program with US Olympian Coach Sarah Holman and is scheduled for one-month coaching exchange program in the United States next summer.

With the Zone 3 Championship set to light up Nairobi, anticipation is building. For Monica and her swimmers, the mission is clear: prove Kenya’s depth, deliver strong performances, and ignite the crowd at home.

As the championship countdown begins, Monica’s message is both hopeful and rallying: Kenya B is ready, and Kasarani will be their stage.
