Speaking on Citizen TV on Wednesday during the CHAN trophy tour, Wanyama said a lot has improved in the national team’s style of play since Benni McCarthy took over.

Despite being knocked out at the quarterfinal stage by Madagascar, Wanyama believes the team is heading in the right direction.

“We have seen a lot of changes since Benni took over the team. The style of play has improved, and we can now build from the back. We are able to defend well even when we are fewer on the pitch. Even in terms of infrastructure, the government has played a huge role in improving it. So far, things are heading in the right direction,” said Wanyama.

With CHAN allowing only locally based players to represent their countries, the Kenyan international said the Stars’ performance in the tournament demonstrated how competitive the Kenyan league can be if proper investment is made, as witnessed during the competition.

“People say our league is weak but we have seen with proper support from all stakeholders of the game we can go very far from the performance we have seen in the tournament with our local players,” added Wanyama

The former Tottenham midfielder went on to encourage players who missed the penalties that saw Stars knocked out to Chin up and keep working hard for their betterment in future campaigns.

“They need to be proud of the achievement they have done so far. Let them not focus on the negative energy on social media they have to chin up and focus on building their careers,” stated the former Stars captain.

The trophy media tour is part of CAF’s initiative to build excitement and connect fans with the tournament ahead of the final, scheduled for August 30 at the Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani, where last edition’s bronze medalists Madagascar will face two-time winners Morocco.
