The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has officially approved an increased attendance capacity at the Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani, allowing up to 36,000 fans for the Friday’s CHAN 2024 quarterfinal clash between Harambee Stars and Madagascar.

The new figure, which represents 80-percent of the stadium’s full capacity, marks a significant increase from the 27,000 fans who were allowed in during Kenya’s 1-0 victory over Zambia last Sunday.

The announcement was made on Wednesday by Sports Cabinet Secretary Salim Mvurya at the Ministry of Sports offices in Talanta Plaza, where he was accompanied by PS Elijah Mwangi, FKF President Hussein Mohammed and Local Organizing Committee (LOC) Chairman Nicholas Musonye,

“As a result of that compliance process, they have considered favorably the request that was put forward by FKF on behalf of the Kenya government,” CS Mvurya said.

“Now tomorrow, we are happy to announce to all Kenyans that in Kasarani, we will have 80% attendance capacity, which translates to 36,000 fans.”

The initial cap had been set at 60 percent following security breaches during Kenya’s earlier match against Morocco.

In response, authorities have tightened protocols, increased crowd-control measures, and expanded fan zones to 13 locations across Nairobi and surrounding areas.

Mvurya has urged fans to conduct themselves responsibly to pave the way for even higher future attendance.

“Quarterfinals is a big game, and therefore, we urge all Kenyans to continue to comply, so that the next time, we play at 100 percent.”

While the capacity increase is a boost to fans and stakeholders alike, ticketing remains a concern.

The official vendor, Mookh.com, has faced backlash in recent weeks over technical glitches, long queues, and double bookings.

“They are aware that there have been challenges,” added Mvurya. “They have put in measures to address all the issues. We are very confident that CAF has the requisite capacity to deal with any challenges on their website and portal.”

As fans await clarity on whether the additional 9,000+ tickets will be released, attention now shifts to the pitch, where Kenya is seeking a historic semi-final spot against 2022 CHAN bronze medallists, Madagascar.
