Cabinet Secretary for Youth Affairs, Creative Economy, and Sports Salim Mvurya has lauded the Harambee Stars and their supporters after Kenya sealed a historic place in the quarterfinals of the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN).

In a statement on Monday, Mvurya congratulated the team for topping Group A following Sunday’s 1-0 victory over Zambia at Kasarani, where Ryan Ogam’s strike proved decisive. The win booked Kenya a quarterfinal clash against Madagascar this Friday at the same venue.

Mvurya described the achievement as Kenya’s most significant continental performance since 1987 and praised the players for their resilience in a group many had labelled the “group of death.”

“The Harambee Stars have lifted the nation’s spirit by choosing hope over fear, optimism over despair, and belief over doubt. In doing so, they have inspired a new generation of Kenyans,” he said.

The Cabinet Secretary also commended Kenyan fans, both in the stadium and across the country, for their discipline and passion. Following CAF sanctions after the fiery Morocco game, Kasarani’s capacity was restricted to 60 percent—around 27,000 seats—with a KSh 6.5 million fine imposed.

To ensure inclusivity, the ministry, in collaboration with the Nairobi County Government, FKF, security agencies, and sponsors, established 10 official fan zones.

More than 26,000 supporters filled Kasarani, while over 50,000 gathered in venues such as Uhuru Park, Jacaranda Grounds, Dandora Stadium, Utalii Grounds, Clay City, and Kibera DC Grounds. Mvurya hailed the atmosphere as unmatched, noting there were no incidents of disorder or breaches of CAF regulations.

“This exemplary conduct has demonstrated that Kenya can host and enjoy football at the highest standards of safety, order, and respect,” he said, calling on Kenyans to turn up once again on Friday and rally behind the Stars as they face Madagascar.

With the ministry, federation, and fans reaffirming their commitment to promoting sports culture, Harambee Stars now prepare for their most important match in decades—one that could further etch their name into African football history.
