Nairobi motorists have been advised to expect major traffic disruptions on Thursday, August 7, as Kenya hosts another round of fixtures in the ongoing 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN).

In a traffic advisory issued by Joseph Chirchir, Officer Commanding Traffic in Nairobi County, several key roads will be closed and diversions put in place to ease movement around the city, particularly near match venues—Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani and Nyayo National Stadium.

Affected roads include:

Aerodrome Road – Closed from Madaraka Roundabout to Bunyala Roundabout

Lang’ata Road – One side closed from Madaraka Roundabout to Lusaka Roundabout

Mombasa Road – One side closed from Lusaka Roundabout to Bunyala Roundabout

The closures are aimed at facilitating the smooth movement of fans, players, and officials, while ensuring security during the high-profile tournament.

Alternative routes suggested:

Motorists on Mombasa Road heading to the CBD should use Likoni–Enterprise Road at General Motors or the Southern Bypass via Ole Sereni

Those on Lang’ata Road are advised to divert via Raila Odinga Road or Muhoho Road at Mbagathi Roundabout

From the CBD heading to Thika, Ruiru, or Juja, motorists should use Limuru Road or Kiambu Road

Matatus ferrying fans to Kasarani Stadium should use Ruaraka–Baba Dogo Road and Ngomongo Road to the Ngomongo Roundabout

Motorists from Thika Road heading to the CBD are advised to use the Eastern Bypass, Kiambu Road, or Limuru Road

Police have strongly cautioned against using Thika Road unless heading directly to Kasarani Stadium.

The traffic plan is part of comprehensive logistical arrangements to ensure the successful hosting of CHAN 2024, with thousands of fans and dignitaries expected to attend the matches.

Earlier, Sports Cabinet Secretary Salim Mvurya assured fans that the government had put in place adequate measures for seamless movement throughout the tournament. Traffic marshals will be deployed along key junctions to guide motorists and minimize bottlenecks.

Upcoming fixtures – Thursday, August 7:

Zambia vs. Congo – Nyayo Stadium, 4:00 PM

Kenya vs. Angola – Kasarani Stadium, 7:00 PM
