Ahead of the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN), which
kicks off this Saturday in Tanzania's Capital Dar es Salaam, Kenyan President William Ruto hosted the
national football team, Harambee Stars, to a breakfast in a bid to boost morale
as they prepare to open their campaign against DR Congo on Sunday at the Moi
International Sports Centre, Kasarani.
President Ruto, who visited the team at their camp, was
accompanied by Sports Cabinet Secretary Salim Mvurya, Principal Secretary
Elijah Mwangi, Local Organising Committee Chairman Nicholas Musonye, and other
senior government officials.
During the visit, the President pledged generous incentives
for the team: Ksh 1 million to each member of the Harambee Stars delegation for
every match won, and Ksh 500,000 for every draw at CHAN 2024. In addition, the
team will receive Ksh 60 million if they reach the quarterfinals, Ksh 70
million for a semifinal berth, and a whopping Ksh 600 million should they win
the tournament.
President Ruto wished the team success and called on all
Kenyans to rally behind Harambee Stars.
Kenya has been drawn in Group A alongside Zambia, DR Congo,
Morocco, and Angola. The biennial tourney will end on August 30 with Kasarani Stadium hosting the final.
