Former Harambee Stars captain and assistant coach Musa Otieno
has backed Kenya to lift the Africa Nations Championship [CHAN] 2024 trophy
after starting their campaign on a high note by defeating two-time champions DR
Congo 1-0 on Sunday at the Moi International Sports Centre Kasarani.
Austin Odhiambo's goal at the stroke of halftime was all
Kenya needed to record a win.
"Sunday was a very big day for the Harambee Stars and
for all Kenyans because it was not easy for them, especially mentally. You know
it was the first match and it is this big CHAN tournament.
“They fought hard and got the victory which is the most
important thing because in a tournament the most important thing is to win the
first match especially if you are at home,” he explained.
Attention now turns to Harambee Stars’ second group match
against Angola on Thursday. The match will be played under floodlights from
7pm.
"Heading into the next match they know how to motivate
each other and especially the fans. People will now want to come to the stadium
in large numbers to witness their games and that will increase their morale and
as a Kenyan I say I am proud of their result on Sunday, kudos to the boys.”
A win in that match against Angola would see Kenya take a
significant step toward securing a historic quarter-final berth in their debut
CHAN tournament.
