The school has secured its place in the regional showpiece after qualifying for the first time in the rugby sevens category, a feat that has sparked excitement across Bungoma County.
Speaking to Citizen Digital, the team's head coach Titus Wangila said qualifying for the East African Games was the team’s top objective this season. “Everyone is happy because this has been our main goal from the start,” Wangila stated.
Wangila, a long-serving and passionate rugby tactician, has been instrumental in building the school's rugby program from the grassroots level. Under his stewardship, Bungoma Boys has steadily risen through the ranks, establishing itself as a force to reckon with in school rugby.
Despite the celebration, Wangila acknowledged that the journey to qualification was anything but easy.
The team had to navigate a highly competitive national school games stage, where they finished in a respectable third place. “The national championship was tough. Every team came prepared, but our boys showed resilience and fought hard for their slot,” he said.
With the East African stage now beckoning, the coach is rallying for greater support from local leadership. He urged leaders from Bungoma County to emulate those from Kakamega County, who are known for investing heavily in sports development at the school level.
“We’ve done our part in getting here. Now we call upon our leaders to walk with us, support us,” Wangila appealed.
The 2025 edition of the East African Secondary School Games promises to be a vibrant affair, especially with host county Kakamega expected to turn out in large numbers.
