Amunga eyeing world record in his 3rd global weightlifting appearance

At only 19, Amunga says his focus is on regaining full strength and sharpening his form as he chases not just a gold medal but also the dream of breaking a world record.

This will mark his third global appearance after representing Kenya in the 2022 edition in Colombia and again in 2023 in Saudi Arabia.

Reflecting on his journey, Amunga noted that “I have six years’ experience in this sport. My coach introduced me to weightlifting, and over time, I have grown to love it deeply.”

Now competing in the under-66kg category, the teenager has intensified his preparations at the Pumwani Sports Grounds gym, training alongside teammates. 

He has described his sessions as rigorous and disciplined, with a clear goal in mind.

“My secret is to train hard. Reaching the level of world record holders is not easy, but I believe in my dream of one day achieving it,” Amunga confidently said.

At the last world championship, Kenya fielded two lifters who ranked among the top 10 globally. 

The team for this year’s championship is scheduled to leave the country on 30th September 2025.
