Alfred Cheruiyot on Monday defended his title in this year’s
Roan Antelope Half Marathon held at Ruma National Park in Homa Bay County.
The athlete who hails from Elgeyo Marakwet County outpaced
more than 100 competitors in the 21km race, which aims to raise awareness and
funds for the conservation of the endangered roan antelope.
This marks the second consecutive year Cheruiyot has won the
event, having also clinched victory in the inaugural edition in 2023.
Speaking to journalists after the race, Cheruiyot attributed
his success to consistent training and discipline.
Alex Ngeiywo from Bungoma County finished second, while
Fredrick Domongole from West Pokot placed third. In the women’s category, Nancy
Cherop emerged champion.
The winners received cash prizes of Ksh 250,000, Ksh
100,000, and Ksh 75,000 for first, second, and third place respectively.
The marathon was jointly organized by the Homa Bay County
Government and the Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS).
Tourism Cabinet Secretary Rebecca Miano, Homa Bay Governor
Gladys Wanga, and KWS Director General Erastus Kanga presided over the event.
CS Miano said the marathon will help boost conservation
efforts aimed at increasing the roan antelope population in the park from the
current 27, while also promoting Kenya’s heritage.
Governor Wanga noted that the marathon was also part of
efforts to promote tourism in Homa Bay County while conserving the roan
antelope species in Ruma National Park.
