A witness has stunned a Kangundo court after revealing how he was hoodwinked by a suspect to assist in withdrawing stolen cash at a Nairobi casino, only to later learn it was proceeds from a violent carjacking.
The case involves former retired chief physiotherapist Titus
Muteti Kilika, who was robbed at Kambai Junction along the Kangundo-Mwala Road,
Machakos County, on April 29, 2024.
During the robbery, Kilika lost a Samsung mobile phone,
national ID card, NHIF card, medical practitioner card, several ATM cards from
Equity, Family, Sidian and Shirika banks, and cash amounting to Ksh1.5 million.
Four suspects — Duncan Wambua Kimeu, Dennis Ndolo Mutunga,
Wambua Kinyili Mutunga, and Charles Mutinda Margaret — were later arrested and
remain in custody.
On Thursday, contractor Augustine Muoki testified to how he was tricked by driver Duncan Wambua, a man well known to him. Muoki said Duncan persistently called him on April 30, 2024, asking for help to withdraw money. Later that night, before midnight (at 11:00 pm), Duncan lured him and another friend, Benjamin, to join him.
They met at a petrol station in Athi River and drove to
Westlands, Nairobi, where Duncan withdrew Ksh.300,000 and gambled at a casino,
losing heavily. He was refunded Ksh.240,000, from which he paid Muoki and
Benjamin only Ksh.20,000 instead of the agreed Ksh.40,000.
Muoki told the court he was later arrested along Kiambu Road
by DCI officers, who asked whether he knew Duncan. He confirmed and narrated
the ordeal, adding that Duncan had claimed the cash was meant to take his uncle
to the hospital. Muoki positively identified Duncan in court.
Several other witnesses, including Chief Inspector Martin
Kitayi, Dr. James Kilika, Corporal Morgan Wekesa, and retired Corporal
Mwakideo, also testified.
Chief Inspector Kitayi told the court that exhibits and
memos were submitted for forensic analysis by Senior Sergeant Fredrick Maina
from Kangundo Police Station.
Corporal Wekesa recounted how the main suspect, Duncan, was
arrested and, during interrogation, led detectives to his accomplice, Dennis
Ndolo. Further intelligence led officers to Kiambu Road, where they arrested
Muoki, who now appears as a State witness.
The case is before Principal Magistrate Sammy Opande and
will be mentioned again on October 28, 2025.
