Wajir Governor Ahmed Abdullahi has been re-elected as the chairperson of the Council of Governors (CoG).

Abdullahi secured his position in an election held for the Executive and Technical Committee Chairs meeting on Monday, at Delta Centre, Westlands, Nairobi.

He will be deputized by Nyeri Governor Mutahi Kahiga, who was also retained as the Vice Chairperson of CoG.

Tharaka Nithi governor Muthomi Njuki has joined the executive as a Whip to pilot the Council’s agenda for the next one year, taking over from Nandi Governor Stephen Sang.

The Council has assured Kenyans that they are committed to strengthen the mandate of the council and protect the spirit of devolution.

The executive announced plans to prioritize the operationalization of the Devolution Training Institute, implement the 2022-2027 Strategic Plan, renew commitment to the Council of Governors and protection of devolution, finalize transfer and costing of devolved functions and expand membership of Ugatuzi Sacco.

The governors also dismissed reports by the Kenya Medical Practitioners, Pharmacists and Dentists Union (KMPDU) claims on health crisis in Kiambu County, dubbing them as ‘false publication’.

“The Council disassociates from the headline about the deaths of 136 babies and categorically states that it is ‘pure witch-hunt’,” read the statement. “The health function in Kiambu is fully functional and all health facilities have doctors on duty.”

It further urged the Ministry of Health and KMPDU to refrain from politicizing the health sector, and respect the government’s mandate to manage it.

“We reiterate that health is a devolved function and must be free from external interference that want to paint a bad picture of devolution and the efforts made so far.”
