Kirinyaga Governor Anne Waiguru has rolled out a countywide empowerment initiative aimed at improving access to clean water, strengthening self-help groups, and supporting youth talent development.
Residents from 15 wards received assorted items, including 6,500 water pipes and 1,100 fittings for last-mile water distribution, 6,270 chairs, 63 tents, 1,000 blankets, catering equipment, car wash machines, and public address systems. About 50 sports clubs also received uniforms, balls, boots, and nets to enhance their activities.
Some residents welcomed the support, saying it would ease long-standing challenges.
“We shall no longer carry water jerry cans on our backs since we now have water drums and pipes that will bring water closer to our homes,” said Rose Mavuti, a mother from Nyangati Ward.
Youth representatives noted that the investment in sports was keeping young people engaged and away from crime.
“Soon we shall even play in international leagues,” said Daniel Kahiga from Kariti Ward, pointing to peers already playing in national competitions.
Governor Waiguru said the initiative was implemented jointly with the County Assembly, with ward funds used to purchase items based on local needs. County Assembly Majority Leader Benson Ngahu said the program showed effective cooperation between the assembly and the executive.
Waiguru also highlighted ongoing investments in the health sector, including support to 75 facilities, upgrades at Kianyaga and Kimbimbi hospitals, and plans to improve Mutithi Health Centre.
The event began with a moment of silence for County Executive Member for Education, Veronica Waweru, and Senior Fire Officer John Kiama, who both died earlier this week.
The launch was attended by Deputy Governor David Githanda, MCAs, community leaders, and local residents.
