The DP said none of the party’s leaders will interfere with the people’s choices calling on the contestants to also consider consensus to pick the party’s flagbearers.
Speaking on Thursday when he hosted leaders and grassroots representatives from Baringo at the Official Residence in Karen, Nairobi, the Deputy President said the party will not take chances in the quest to retain the Baringo Senate seat and others in by-elections slated for next November.
“We can’t afford useless tricks that might cost us the seat. We must find a fair and acceptable way to pick one of the UDA candidates for the by-election.
The President, the Deputy President, MPs and all the elected leaders will not interfere with the people’s choices. All of us will respect who the voters will choose. We don’t have any preferences,” he said.
He said the party will fully back the winner of the party’s primaries calling on the losers to be ready to throw their weight behind them.
“We will look into the best way to pick the best. If the contestants cannot agree on one person, we will hold free and fair nominations and back the winner.
The winner will be supported by all the contestants. If you openly back the winner, we will hold your hand and find a place for you somewhere else,” DP noted.
On development, the DP affirmed the government’s focus on rolling out various development projects in Baringo County for the benefit of residents.
The DP said the county, like every part of the country, is key to the nation’s progress and remains at the centre of the extensive development agenda.
“We are constructing 12 modern markets in Baringo which are among the 400 ongoing nationally. Most are underway and near completion and others will commence soon.
All the technical institutes and KMTCs in Baringo are beneficiaries of the hostels constructed under the affordable housing programme to ensure learners study without common external distractions,” he said.
Also, stalled roads have been revived and will be completed on time.
The government is also intensifying the last-mile electricity connection in the area as it aims to ensure all households are connected in the next three years.
“We have a good plan for roads, electricity, water, markets, agriculture, education and all the other key sectors that will transform the sectors for the benefit of all our people,” DP noted.
The DP said restoration of peace in Baringo and Kerio Valley was among the administration’s top agenda pointing at notable progress in achieving this in three years.
“We restored peace and security in most parts of the county when I was Interior Cabinet Secretary. I have a lot of faith that the current Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen will complete the remaining work because we want a peaceful and united Baringo County,” he said.
At the same time, the DP said the administration will press on perfecting universal health coverage through SHA revealing the focus is on dealing with teething issues.
“This is the most extensive healthcare program ever implemented in the country. Many countries have tried it but have been unsuccessful. President Ruto will deliver on universal health coverage,” he noted.
