Trianum Hospitality, one of East Africa’s leading independent hotel operators, is marking its 15th anniversary with a regional expansion plan anchored on new hospitality concepts and environmental, social, and governance (ESG) commitments.

Founded in 2010 as a boutique advisory firm, Trianum has grown into a hospitality management company overseeing seven properties with 335 keys in Nairobi, Mombasa, and Kisumu. The company reports average occupancy rates of 80 percent and EBITDA margins of more than 30 percent for stabilized properties.

“Our niche is bridging the gap for investors and developers who have the capital to build hotels but not the operational expertise to make them succeed,” said Samantha Muna, Founder and Board Director. “We bring that expertise, pair it with global brand partnerships like Best Western, and deliver properties that meet both local and international standards.”

The operator has seen its guest profile shift over the years. While initially targeting expatriates and UN staff, the majority of its clientele is now Pan-African, with business and leisure travelers from Uganda, South Sudan, Rwanda, and beyond.

Trianum has also carved a niche in medical tourism, offering serviced apartments for families of patients seeking treatment in Nairobi. The model has become attractive to first-time visitors, researchers, and students who value security and service reliability compared to short-term rental platforms.

Looking ahead, the company has projects in development in Rwanda, Zanzibar, and other East African hubs, with feasibility work underway for up to four new properties. Past projects include the Executive Residency by Best Western on Riverside Drive and Heri Heights SureStay Collection by Best Western on Arboretum Drive.

“We are committed to growing the Pan-African hospitality footprint—one project and one trusted client at a time,” added Muna.

Central to the company’s strategy is its sustainability and community impact agenda, branded as LOCAL (Local Options to Create an African Landscape). This includes sourcing from Kenyan suppliers, creating opportunities for women and youth in hospitality careers, and embedding environmental measures such as eliminating single-use plastics, recycling, and energy-saving systems.

“At Trianum, impact goes beyond business,” said Liza Uku, CEO. “We design properties and run operations in a way that strengthens communities and connects guests to authentic Kenyan and African experiences.”

To sustain growth, Trianum is rolling out a new vision under the brand “Trianum Living,” which will include apartment hotels, curated homestays, boutique lifestyle hotels, and a modern bistro concept, Scapes The Restaurant. The company has also formally entered Rwanda through Trianum Century Rwanda Limited and is exploring opportunities in Uganda and Tanzania.

Longstanding partnerships with Best Western since 2016 have enhanced its global positioning, while discussions with other international brands are ongoing. Trianum is also preparing to establish a hotel equity fund to back high-potential projects and make hospitality more accessible as an asset class.
