Machakos Governor Wavinya Ndeti has launched the third edition of the Governor Wavinya Cup, a countywide football tournament that has become one of the largest grassroots sports events in Kenya.
The launch took place at Kisooni Catholic Church grounds in Mumbuni North Ward, where residents turned out in large numbers to support the event.
Speaking at the ceremony, Governor Ndeti said the tournament, which began in 2022, aims to provide young people with opportunities for talent development and pathways to professional careers in sports.
"This year’s tournament is bigger and better, with 650 teams from all 40 wards of Machakos. Under the theme “Nurturing Talent, Greening Our Future & Empowering Generations”, it goes beyond football to promote sports, conservation, and mental health," said the Governor.
She highlighted success stories from past editions, including Mary Nthambi, who now plays for Police Bullets in the Women’s Premier League, and Felix Mwendwa of Kaluluini FC, who traveled to Spain for professional trials.
According to the governor, the initiative is part of her administration’s broader agenda to promote social and economic empowerment, particularly among youth, women, persons with disabilities, and vulnerable groups.
The first edition in 2022 attracted 640 teams, with 12 players securing spots in various Kenyan leagues. Last year’s edition drew more than 650 teams, with the finals at Kenyatta Stadium attracting an estimated 20,000 fans.
The 2025 edition, scheduled to run from September 20 to December 13, will feature 650 teams drawn from all 40 wards of Machakos County.
New components introduced this year include training and scouting clinics led by international players, tree planting and environmental conservation activities, and mental health awareness campaigns targeting the youth.
Governor Ndeti also noted that her administration is working on long-term plans to support county leagues and lower-division clubs. She acknowledged the Football Kenya Federation for its support since the inception of the tournament.
The governor officially declared the tournament open, encouraging young people to participate actively in the competition.
