Police have arrested a man accused of stealing more than Ksh.500,000 from a client while posing as a taxi driver.
According to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations
(DCI) Fred Atandi Morara was arrested on Tuesday following a report filed by
the victim who alleged that the accused stole his phone and transferred over Ksh.
500,000 from his account.
On the night of August 8, 2025, the victim and his friend
were leaving a social joint and was in the process of requesting online cab services.
When the suspect spotted them, he offered to drop them off at an Airbnb within
Lavington with a more compelling and competitive price.
After the drop off, the suspect allegedly disappeared with
the victim’s phone and managed to transfer the money from different mobile
money accounts.
The detectives established that the suspect deactivated the
accounts so as to frustrate any form of tracing.
During the arrest Morara was operating a Mazda Demio fitted
with the suspected fake registration plates, KDQ 810B, with another spare set
registration number KDN 993Q. Detectives also recovered various mobile phones,
sim cards and a sisal rope.
He has since been handed over to the DCI Dagoretti for
further processing.
