The Social Health Authority (SHA) says it has released Ksh.3.4
billion to health facilities across the country to settle claims under the
Social Health Insurance Fund (SHIF).
In a statement issued on Thursday, SHA Chief Executive
Officer Mercy Mwangangi said the funds cover inpatient care, drugs and
substance abuse treatment, mental wellness, critical care, and surgeries.
Dr Mwangangi said an additional Ksh.1.09 billion has
been disbursed from the Primary Health Care Fund, while another Ksh.1.7
billion is being processed for dialysis, oncology, and surgical claims.
“An updated list of disbursements will be published on the
SHA website in due course,” she said, clarifying reports circulating on social
media regarding allocations to specific hospitals.
According to Mwangangi, Nyandiwa Level 4 Hospital in
Homa Bay County received Ksh.19 million between January and June 2025
for inpatient long stays and maternity services.
Her statement came in the backdrop of a list circulating on
social media appearing to show a ‘Nyandiwa Dispensary’ as having received Ksh.10,080
in July and another showing ‘Nyandiwa Dispensary’ as having received Ksh.19
million from SHA in August.
Additionally, an old photo of a neglected-looking Nayandiwa Health Centre, with its gate covered in overgrown grass, further fuelled confusion as to whether millions might have been paid to a ‘ghost’ facility. It was not immediately clear, however, whether the hospital in the photo was the 'Nyandiwa Level 4 Hospital' Dr Mwangangi was referring to.
“SHA remains committed to timely payments, accountability,
and transparency,” the SHA CEO added.
