Nominated Senator Tabitha Mutinda distanced herself from claims that Senators received Kshs.10 million to impeach former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua.

In an interview on Citizen TV’s DayBreak show, Tabitha was cornered by her Murang’a County counterpart Joe Nyutu on whether she received the amount, faintly denying and instead told Nyutu to control his frustrations.

Senator Nyutu claimed that every member of the Senate, himself included, was offered Kshs. 10 million to impeach Gachagua, which he refused, but insisted that Senator Tabitha accepted the amount.

“The issue of bribery and the Kshs.10 million, Sen. Tabitha says I’m frustrated, with what? Let her swear before God and Kenyans, today that she didn’t receive the Kshs.Ksh.10 million,” stated Nyutu.

In her rebuttal, Senator Tabitha said, "Did you give me anything? It is sad, so sad...I did not receive anything to impeach Gachagua...Just manage your frustrations. Just move forward."

She further stated that the impeachment process is a done deal and should be left in the past.

Nyutu's sentiments lie on the backdrop of Gachagua's claims in September 2024 that the amount offered to the Senators was Ksh.5 million.

Gachagua made the remarks in a rally in Mwea, Kirinyaga County, where he claimed that Senators and Members of Parliament were being coerced and offered Kshs. 5 million to vote in favor of the motion to oust him from office.

He further added that MPs allied to him, Woman Representative Njeri Maina and Senator James Murango were offered the amount if they voted yes, but they declined in defiance.

The Senate resolved to impeach Gachagua on October 17, 2024, following a two-day exercise that entailed volumes of evidence and hours of cross-examination.

Senators voted in favour of five out of the 11 grounds presented as grounds for his removal.
