The impeachment trial of Kericho Governor Eric Mutai will be held in the Senate plenary next week for three days from Wednesday, August 27, to Friday, August 29, when senators will decide whether to uphold the county assembly’s decision to oust him or save him for the second time.

Senate Speaker Amason Kingi ruled that the impeachment hearing of the Kericho governor would proceed in plenary after the motion to establish a special committee failed for lack of a seconder.

The motion which Senate Majority Leader Aaron Cheruiyot had moved lacked the backing of Minority Leader Stewart Madzayo.

“I hereby move the motion of impeachment and invite the minority leader to second,” said Cheruiyot.

“I do not support the motion,” Madzayo responded.

Further attempts to have the impeachment trial heard and determined by an 11-member special committee failed, with Deputy Speaker Kathuri Murungi suggesting an alternative option—only for Kingi to rule it out, citing standing orders.

Mutai was impeached after 33 out of 47 MCAs voted to remove him from office.

He is accused of abuse of office, illegal and irregular appointments, and the sacking of senior county officials. The governor had previously survived a similar ouster in October 2024.
