Nurses in Machakos County have officially ended their strike following a successful meeting between union representatives and county officials.
The industrial action, which had entered its second week,
has been suspended for 90 days with nurses instructed to resume duty within 48
hours.
Michael Saka, the Machakos branch secretary of the Kenya National Union of Nurses (KNUN), confirmed that the county government has committed to some of the demands by the medics.
Among the commitments are clearing all outstanding loan deductions and implementing the
Salaries and Remuneration Commission (SRC) directive on salary increments for
public servants by September 30.
The county has also agreed to promote nurses who have served
for over seven years within two weeks, increase monthly allowances from Ksh.10,000
to Ksh.25,000 and implementing of the CBA.
Saka assured striking nurses that no disciplinary action
would be taken against any participant in the strike.
County secretary Muya Ndambuki added that further promotions
are planned for the 2026/2027 financial year.
He also clarified that the recently advertised 500 nursing
positions are unrelated to the strike.
