Over 2,000 residents in Kisumu and Nairobi Counties gained access to sustainable solar energy this week through the clean energy innovator BLUETTI’s Lighting an African Family (LAAF) initiative, in partnership with UN-Habitat. The week-long rollout marks a major step in their shared mission to promote energy equity across Africa.

This partnership stems from initial engagement at the 12th World Urban Forum (WUF12) in Cairo last year, where BLUETTI and UN-Habitat signed a Technology Transfer MOU to accelerate solar adoption across the continent. In May 2025, BLUETTI deepened its commitment to support localized energy initiatives under its long-term charitable program, Lighting An African Family (LAAF), founded in 2021 to illuminate off-grid communities with accessible and sustainable solar energy.

As part of the collaboration, BLUETTI was invited to the 2025 Devolution Conference, Kenya’s premier national policy forum, held on August 12–15. There, the company shared its vision and insights on how solar energy can strengthen community resilience and support community-led social housing development.

“Building social houses is more than creating shelters. With clean energy, we create homes filled with warmth and heart. BLUETTI is proud to be part of this mission,” said Kalen Guo, Director of BLUETTI Middle East and Africa Region.

The first local rollout took place from August 18 to 22 in two fast-growing settlements: Muhoroni in Kisumu County and the Ex-Grogon and Mathare areas in Nairobi County. This effort is also part of UN-Habitat’s Partnership for the Implementation of the New Urban Agenda (PINUA), integrated into its 2026–2029 Strategic Plan.

Over a week of community engagement, BLUETTI donated a total of 500 sets of its E60 solar lighting and energy storage systems, directly benefiting more than 2,000 residents.

These solar energy storage solutions provide reliable, sustainable energy access while contributing to environmental goals. It’s estimated that the deployment will help offset 337.5 tons of carbon emissions over the next five years. Alongside product donations, BLUETTI and UN-Habitat co-hosted sustainability workshops and conducted community education sessions with local leaders to foster long-term energy resilience and environmental awareness.

UN-Habitat National Programme Officer, Jeremiah Ougo, highlighted that the partnership extends beyond lighting during the Muhoroni community engagement, “With housing and infrastructure projects being implemented in parallel, we are identifying the households that will benefit from the housing activity.”

For residents, the impact was immediate. Ismael Bakari Billal, one of the beneficiaries living in Muhoroni, said, “As a family, we have been struggling for a long time, but from today, even if it rains and electricity goes out, the solar lights will help us. My children will read at night without difficulty, God bless the county, BLUETTI, and UN-Habitat.”

Another resident, Eunice Awino, a 38-year-old mother of five, expressed relief. “I’m pleased to get these solar lights. They will help my children read at night and improve their education. I thank the county, BLUETTI, and UN-Habitat, may God continue blessing them.” she said.

That same week, the BLUETTI Africa team joined UN-Habitat in a visit to the Kisumu County Government, where they introduced the LAAF initiative and highlighted the role of clean energy technologies in transforming community life. Mr. Aloice Ager, Chief of Staff and Coordinator for Partnerships and Resource Mobilization of Kisumu County, commended BLUETTI’s contributions through training and product donations, and expressed interest in future collaborations to integrate BLUETTI solar technologies into municipal development.

The BLUETTI–UN-Habitat partnership is just getting started. Following the successful launch in Kenya, plans are underway to expand this model to more African countries.
