Public Health Principal Secretary Mary Muthoni has called on public health officers across the country to tame smoking around public places, including schools and churches.
According to Muthoni, the Ministry of Health has zero tolerance towards secondary smoking, which has prevailed in homes, affecting many children.
The Public Health PS also warned parents against smoking around their children because secondary smoking is causing more harm.
“We have zero tolerance for tobacco in schools and homes. Parents must not smoke around their children. Secondary smoking causes more harm; it is more dangerous,” said Muthoni.
Muthoni added that public health officials under MoH are able and trained to stop smoking near schools and churches.
“We have enough public officers in this country who are able, trained and have the requisite information to enforce,” said Muthoni.
Speaking during a public health forum at Gacharu village in Kirinyaga County, Muthoni also warned the youth against indulgence in illegal tobacco products such as Shisha and e-cigarettes.
“It is expensive, it is deadly. One electric cigarette will cost you not less than Ksh.3,000. How many youths will afford to get the puffs? They might end up stealing,” the PS said, committing to a continued crackdown of Shisha dens.
