President William Ruto on Thursday laid the foundation stone for the Awendo Affordable Housing Project, which will deliver 293 housing units within the next 12 months at a cost of Ksh.750 million.

Speaking at the 1.8-acre site during the handover of the plot to the contractor, M/s Ellys Engineering Works Limited, the President said the government is committed to supporting projects that improve living standards, create decent jobs, and open business opportunities for Jua Kali sector workers.

“This project shows that my government is promoting development across all regions. The Affordable Housing Programme is working for all Kenyans, and no area will be left behind. Today, Awendo’s skyline will change in ways that will directly benefit local residents and businesses,” he said.

The development, located next to the Awendo Mosque, will comprise two high-rise residential blocks—a 14-storey building with 165 units and a 15-storey building with 128 units. Amenities will include a community centre, playground, parking facilities, landscaped green spaces, a garbage collection point, a powerhouse, a guardhouse, and internal access roads.

According to the Ministry of Lands, during construction, the project will employ 440 workers on site. The Migori Jua Kali sector will receive ring-fenced contracts worth Ksh.249.8 million for the manufacture and supply of windows, doors, and balustrades, ensuring that a significant portion of the expenditure remains within the local economy.

As part of community support, Anindo Primary School—located next to the project site—will be upgraded to accommodate an expected increase in enrolment.

The project will also provide on-the-job training for local residents in trades such as masonry, plumbing, carpentry, electrical wiring, painting, landscaping, LPG reticulation, interior design, welding, and metal fabrication. Participants will be assessed and certified by the Kenya National Qualifications Authority (KNQA).
