The second Climate Summit will take place from September 8 to September 10 in Addis, where Heads of State and Government will convene to advance Africa’s leadership in climate action and green growth.
Nairobi hosted the first African Climate Summit in September 2023. Here, the 2023 Nairobi Declaration was unveiled, a unified stance by the African Union calling for new financing mechanisms for green growth, including a global carbon tax on fossil fuel trade, maritime, and aviation transport.
Then, the AU also pushed for reform of the global financial system to support Africa's climate and development agenda.
State House spokesperson Hussein Mohamed says Ruto is set to launch the report “From Nairobi to Addis Ababa: Africa’s Journey of Climate Action and Partnership.”
“The report reviews progress since the first Africa Climate Summit in Nairobi, assesses current realities, and maps future pathways,” says Mohamed in a statement on Sunday.
In Addis Ababa, the President will also witness the signing of the Cooperation Framework for the Africa Green Industrialisation Initiative (AGII) and address the Africa-CARICOM (Caribbean Community) Summit on reparatory justice, debt sustainability, and transcontinental cooperation.
During the summit, Ruto is also expected to engage in climate finance talks to unlock investment and amplify Africa’s role in shaping global reforms.
“President Ruto will push for fair resource valuation, equitable carbon pricing, and financial reforms to ease debt and climate risks.”
In addition, the President will be the chief guest at the inauguration of the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam, a project that delivers clean, affordable electricity, strengthening energy security, stabilising supply during droughts, and supporting industrial growth.
