Police have opened investigations into a fire that swept through Jangwani Village in Mathare Area 4, destroying more than 45 homes and leaving scores of residents homeless.

The inferno, which broke out earlier this week, claimed the life of one person while two minors are fighting for their lives at the Kenyatta National Hospital after sustaining severe burns.

Residents say they have been left to fend for themselves in the aftermath, accusing local authorities of neglect.

“We have been here for four days since the fire and no one has come to assist us,” lamented Pauline Kamura, a Jangwani resident.

“We are sleeping in the cold without food. Leaders are nowhere to be seen,” added another resident, Evan Omondi.

The blaze also left two children, five-year-old Gabriel Muuo Mulinge and his younger brother, two-and-a-half-year-old Daniel Mumo, critically injured. Both are admitted to the Intensive Care Unit at Kenyatta National Hospital.

Their mother, Joyce Maweya Mulinge, recalled the terrifying moment her children were caught in the flames.

“He asked me where the fire had come from, saying he only saw flames suddenly inside the house,” she recounted tearfully.
