On Sunday, hundreds of congregants gathered on the disputed land, standing alongside their church leadership in protest. The members insist the land legally belongs to the church and accused the government of sidelining them in the decision-making process.
“As a church, we are not opposed to development. But the community must be involved. If the government respects the law, then public participation must be conducted,” said Rev. Muthui Njuguna of PCEA Baraka Parish.
The church maintains that it has defended ownership of the land for years, warning against what it termed an arbitrary takeover.
“This land was given to the church, and it cannot be taken without involving the people of Rongai. It is frustrating that the so-called public participation excluded us,” said John Chang’ari, moderator of the Kajiado Presbytery.
Residents also voiced their discontent, calling for the government to suspend the project until ownership issues are fully resolved.
“We are asking the government to slow down until everything is concluded. We must protect the 152 acres,” said Moses Kamalik, a resident of Rongai.
Another resident, Paul Mwaura, stressed that legal proceedings are already underway. “We are opposing the project in its entirety. We are in court, and as long as the matter is unresolved, no project will begin.”
