Former Chief Justice David Maraga, who has expressed interest in
contesting the presidency in the next general election, has slammed ongoing empowerment
fundraisers undertaken by the Kenya Kwanza leadership.
Maraga called on Kenyans not to be hoodwinked by short-term gain at the
expense of long-term development.
Maraga, who was in Kirinyaga for a town hall on how to grow the economy
and create jobs, asked Kenyans to question the source of the money raised by
the Kenya Kwanza leaders who traverse the country under the guise of empowering
women's groups, among others.
"Hii mambo ati mnaambiwa eti empowerment. Empowerment ni ya nini?
Mnataka kupeanwa ati mnaletewa Ksh.1000? Hiyo unapewa itakuchukua siku ngapi?
Kwanza jiulize hivi, imetoka wapi?” He posed.
“Hiyo ni mali yenu mumeibiwa, sasa mnaanza kuambiwa eti mnapewa
empowerment. Wale ambao wameiba wanawaletea ndio waonekane ndio wako na
masilahi yenu. Wacha, hakuna kitu kama hiyo.”
The empowerment fundraisers are spearheaded by Deputy President Kithure Kindiki,
President William Ruto’s aide Farouk Kibet, and Leader of the Majority in the
National Assembly Kimani Ichung’wah.
The leaders have been traversing the country in the last few months with
a focus on empowering women's groups.
