Speaking after signing a Project Development Agreement with CNEEC, Sakaja said the initiative would address Nairobi’s decades-old waste problem while generating power and creating jobs. The Ministry of Energy, through EPRA, is finalizing a Power Purchase Agreement to support the project.
“This project will transform the city while creating green jobs for Nairobi’s youth,” Sakaja said, terming it a milestone that had eluded previous administrations.
Once operational, the plant will convert solid waste into electricity, promoting environmental sustainability and boosting economic opportunities for residents.
The project builds on recent county efforts to modernize waste management, including the hiring of 4,000 Green Army workers on permanent terms and the acquisition of new garbage trucks and loaders. The Green Nairobi Company Limited, a newly established county body, will oversee solid waste management and the plant’s development.
Sakaja described the venture as a game-changer that positions Nairobi as a continental leader in innovative waste management.
