Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has revealed that the government is closing in on major suppliers of marijuana in Western Kenya, in a bid to scuttle the distribution network of the banned substance.

Speaking during the Jukwaa La Usalama security engagement baraza with residents, leaders and local administration in Vihiga County, Murkomen said marijuana is a major security problem in the county, with Luanda location earmarked as the hotbed of the illegal drug, which is largely imported from neighbouring countries and distributed to other parts of the country.

The CS also noted that the proliferation of gangs, mostly in urban centres, needs a wider conversation on handling beyond arrest and prosecution of suspects.

“We must rid Luanda of marijuana. And the biggest issue is to deal with the big suppliers. Already, a notorious lady, a major supplier, is in our radar and you will soon see arrests. But beyond arrests, we are embarking on an all-of-society conversation on sociocultural change which is critical especially for victims,” Murkomen stated.
