Alego Usonga MP Samuel Atandi, has voiced strong opposition to Siaya Governor James Orengo over an alleged plan to shut down Jaramogi Oginga Odinga University of Science and Technology (JOOUST) Siaya Campus.

Atandi claims that the county government intends to reclaim the land currently occupied by the university’s School of Agriculture at the Siaya Agricultural Training Center (ATC), with plans to construct new county headquarters on the site.

According to the MP, the university administration has informed him of a possible relocation of over 1,200 students to the main campus in Bondo.

Speaking in Alego on Saturday, Atandi expressed disappointment over the development, citing multiple meetings with Governor Orengo where he had pleaded for the land to be permanently allocated to the university.

He warned that removing the institution would negatively impact Siaya town’s economy, which benefits significantly from the presence of higher education facility.

However, Siaya County Assembly’s Land and Physical Planning Committee Chairman James Obiero Otare, has dismissed Atandi’s concerns. Otare assured the public that the issue has been resolved and that JOOUST will not be evicted from the ATC grounds.

He further clarified that the university had requested 30 acres of land within the same parcel, which has already been allocated. Otare emphasized that JOOUST’s operations in Siaya will continue without disruption.
