Moi University
lecturers have called off their industrial action after reaching an agreement
with the university council.
According to the
Universities Academic Staff Union (UASU) branch Secretary General Dr. Busolo
Wekesa, both parties negotiated on several issues that they had raised and
agreed to resolve them on an issue-by-issue basis.
The SG noted that
the council agreed to withdraw the redundancy letters that had been issued to
the members of the staff.
"Those who
received redundancy letters will return to work as the university council has
agreed to withdraw those letters," Wekesa stated.
Both parties also
reached a consensus on the call for the promotion of 56 dons who had been
interviewed in December last year and also for the university to review the
statute on the appointment mode of deans as before.
Dr. Busolo said
they also agreed on the instant promotion of lecturers once they are back from
further studies abroad.
On statutory
deductions and pending arrears, the parties resolved to iron out the issue once
they receive funds from the exchequer.
"We have also
settled on arrears and pension whereby both parties agreed to settle the matter
once the government disburses the funds," he noted.
The strike, which
commenced on August 20, 2025, has been ongoing as the lecturers noted that they
wouldn't resume their duties till the return-to-work formula signed with the
university council on November 30, 2024, is implemented.
The union also
demanded that salaries for June and July 2025 should be paid as per the
negotiated 2021-2025 Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) rates.
Additionally, it
wanted the clauses on review and promotion of staff and retirement age in the
negotiated 2021-2025 national CBA to be fully
honoured.
