Inmates requiring medical attention at Mbagathi Hospital have been left stranded after the facility suspended all services to prisoners over an outstanding debt of more than Ksh.12 million owed by the Kenya Prisons Service.

The suspension, which took effect on August 4, has escalated into a standoff between the hospital and the State Department for Correctional Services, with no resolution yet in sight.

According to Mbagathi Hospital management, the debt stems from years of unpaid bills for treatment provided to inmates. By November 2024, the arrears had accumulated to Sh6.7 million for services rendered between July 2018 and November 2022.

Despite repeated reminders, no payments were made, and the figure has since ballooned past Sh12 million.

Hospital administrators say the mounting debt has crippled their ability to procure essential supplies, leaving suspension of inmate healthcare as the only viable option.

In response, the Prisons Service has appealed for the decision to be reversed while discussions continue on a payment plan. Meanwhile, prison authorities have been forced to seek alternative medical facilities for inmates in urgent need of care.
