Former Interior Cabinet Secretary and 2027 presidential
hopeful Dr. Fred Matiang’i has jetted back into the country following a tour of
the United States, where he addressed a series of diaspora engagement forums
alongside former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua.
While abroad, Matiang’i
criss-crossed major U.S. cities including Baltimore and Seattle, holding
intimate town-hall-style meetings with Kenyan professionals keen on
contributing to national development ahead of the next electoral cycle.
In Baltimore, he urged Kenyan doctors, educators and
technology experts in the diaspora to plough their expertise and resources back
into the country’s health care and education sectors.
He further rallied support for his presidential bid, arguing
the diaspora must play a more decisive role in shaping Kenya’s political
future.
His engagements overlapped with those of Gachagua, who was in
the U.S. on what he termed a “liberation mission” aimed at rallying patriotic
Kenyans abroad towards what he called national accountability and economic
renewal.
The two are said to have privately met in Aberdeen, Maryland,
where they discussed “emerging national challenges.”
Upon his return, Matiang’i on
Friday headed to the Kamakis area of Ruiru, Kiambu County, where he mingled
freely with residents before sitting down to a hot platter of mbuzi choma in
what observers interpreted as a symbolic gesture of reconnecting with the
ordinary voter.
The former CS took time to listen to locals’ concerns on the
economy, security and the high cost of living.
His public appearance in Ruiru is being read as part of a
broader charm offensive targeting the populous Mount Kenya region, which is
expected to be pivotal in the 2027 race.
Political analysts note that Matiang’i’s decision to combine
international diaspora lobbying with grassroots Kenyan politicking signals the
start of a vigorous two-pronged presidential strategy.
His U.S. tour provided a platform to court well-heeled
diaspora voters and potential financiers, while the Ruiru stop cast him as a
leader still firmly rooted in traditional political mobilisation at home.
