The Machakos County Assembly is today expected to resume proceedings seeking the removal of Speaker Ann Kiusya from office, following a High Court ruling that cleared the way for the process to continue.

The court last week lifted a temporary suspension that had stalled the motion in March after Speaker Kiusya moved to challenge her planned ouster.

With the ruling in place, the Assembly will now reintroduce the proposal to remove her from the Speaker’s seat.

Before the legal battle, at least 33 ward representatives had already endorsed the motion.

Majority Leader Nicholas Nzioka, who sponsored it, accused Kiusya of breaching legal procedures by presiding over discussions on her own removal instead of stepping aside.

Nzioka confirmed that the motion has since been forwarded to the House Business Committee and is expected to be voted on before it is brought back to the floor for debate.

The push for her removal is said to be championed largely by Wiper Party–aligned Members of County Assembly (MCAs), while a section of members has dismissed it as political grandstanding.

If Speaker Kiusya steps down, Deputy Speaker Stephen Nzue Mwanthi is expected to take over leadership of the Assembly.

Efforts to obtain a comment from Kiusya were futile, as calls to her phone went unanswered and she could not be reached at her office despite repeated attempts.
