Lands Principal Secretary Generali Nixon Korir on Thursday addressed a public gathering at Angata Barrikoi as part of the government’s efforts to resolve land disputes in Transmara that have persisted for the last five decades.
The PS met with
elders at Ongata Barrikoi Girls High School, where he announced that the
government will begin implementing a consent agreement reached between groups
that have been locked in disputes over the land.
"I have
been sent here by the President after he met with representatives of the
different communities living here. We will implement the consent you reached
after the meetings you held with His Excellency the President," said the
PS.
Kilgoris MP
Julius Sunkuli welcomed the PS’s visit and thanked the President for his
initiative to find a lasting solution to the dispute.
"We have
come to accompany PS Korir, who has been sent by the President to conclude the
resolution of the dispute that has pitted the two communities living here
against each other for many years," said the MP.
Emurua Dikirr
MP Johanah Ngeno, who also accompanied the PS, said residents appreciate the
government’s initiative and urged them to strive to maintain peace.
The PS and
other leaders said the recent incident in which government officials were
attacked by locals was a result of misunderstanding and suspicion.
The PS
directed the area Deputy County Commissioner to coordinate a committee of 10
people who will accompany surveyors once they begin work on Wednesday next
week.
