Grief has engulfed Chung’uti village in Muhotetu Location, Laikipia West Constituency, after two young children—a four-year-old girl and her two-year-old brother—tragically perished in a house fire early Monday morning.

The children were alone in their timber house at the time of the incident.

Their mother, Rahab Wanjiru, had briefly stepped out to a nearby shop when she was alerted by frantic calls from neighbours.

By the time she returned, the house was already engulfed in flames.

According to eyewitnesses, local residents made desperate attempts to battle the blaze, but the fire spread rapidly and proved too intense to contain.

The wooden structure was reduced to ashes, with the children trapped inside.

Their grandfather, Robbert Mwangi, was among the first relatives to arrive at the scene.

Visibly shaken, he described the horror of watching the house consumed by fire while helpless to save the children. "The flames were too fierce. No one could get close enough," he said.

The tragedy has left the tight-knit community reeling. Residents and neighbours gathered at the scene in shock, struggling to come to terms with the loss.

Muhotetu Location Chief Jane Wangechi Muturi and Marmanet Ward MCA Simon Kanyutu also visited the site to offer their condolences and support to the bereaved family

Authorities confirmed that the two children were asleep when the fire broke out and were burned beyond recognition.

The cause of the fire remains unknown, but investigations are currently underway to determine what sparked the fatal inferno.
