Speaking to the press, community leaders and youth representatives expressed frustration, claiming that the nomination process failed to consider regional and ethnic balance—particularly the representation of the Maa community, which they say has long been sidelined in political appointments despite its significant presence and contribution in the region.
“We feel ignored and marginalized. The Maa community deserves fair representation, especially in leadership positions that directly affect our people,” said one youth leader during a community forum held in Kitengela.
The ODM Youth League has also raised concerns over the legality and transparency of the nomination process, arguing that Kipchumba’s name was not next in line according to the party list submitted to the IEBC in 2022. They allege that another candidate, John Ketora, was more deserving based on the party’s nomination ranking.
In response, the IEBC defended its decision, stating that the nomination followed the guidelines set out in the Elections Act and party-list rules, including considerations of gender, disability, and marginalized groups.
Despite this explanation, local leaders and residents are calling on both ODM and the IEBC to reconsider the nomination, warning of legal action and political consequences if the matter is not addressed promptly.
