Kenya and China have marked a decade of collaboration in vocational training and innovation after the 10th Africa Tech Challenge (ATC) concluded in Nairobi, bringing together young talent from 12 African countries.

Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Migosi Ogamba said the competition reflects Kenya’s vision of equipping youth with practical skills that drive economic transformation.

“We are equipping youth to create jobs, drive manufacturing, and compete globally,” Ogamba said, adding that the ATC provides a platform where young Africans “embrace technology, push boundaries, and showcase Africa’s readiness for the Fourth Industrial Revolution.”

China’s Aviation Industry Corporation (AVIC), through AVIC Innovation, has led the initiative since 2014. Executive Vice President Li Qingtang said ATC embodies China’s commitment to supporting Africa’s industrial future.

“Through our ‘Blue Ribbon’ initiative, we have built and upgraded 189 vocational institutions across Africa, training more than 20,000 teachers and students annually,” Li said.

“The spirit of ATC — aspiration, transformation, collaboration — will continue to guide vocational skills education between China and Africa” added Li

Principal Secretary for Vocational and Technical Training, Esther Muoria, and other senior officials, including representatives from the Chinese Embassy in Kenya, also attended the event.

The event also marked the release of the ATC 10th Anniversary Report, outlining how the program’s integrated model of “training, competition, study in China” has benefited youth in 14 African countries.

Dr. Korir Sing’Oei, Principal Secretary for the State Department for Foreign Affairs praised the long-running partnership for investing in Africa’s future.

“AVIC has demonstrated commitment to Africa by investing in young people who are now making tangible contributions to their countries. This collaboration has strengthened the friendship between China and Africa,” he said,

The ceremony also showcased cultural exchange, with students from the University of Nairobi’s Confucius Institute presenting performances that blended Chinese and African traditions to wide applause.

Competition winners were announced across three categories — CNC Turning, Mechanical Engineering CAD, and Mobile Application Development.

The top teams will travel to China for WorldSkills training programs, while six outstanding individuals received full scholarships to pursue studies in China.
